Legal firms are increasingly expected to have sound management systems that are reliable and well maintained. This allows the firm, its partners, directors, officers and customers to have confidence in the processes of the firms, its decisions, advice and actions.
ISO9001 is the international standard on quality management. It is a broad and generic standard that is being used in many business or government sectors.
Law 9000 tailors and better defines the requirements of ISO9001 as they apply to legal practices.
Whilst certification is not mandatory (it can be if required by contract), once a practice has decided to seek certification the requirements of ISO9001 incorporating Law 9000 become mandatory and should be implemented across the practice consistently.
Quality assurance and quality management are very widely discussed and published topics at present.
Many compliance programs and regulations are being designed around a management system approach, which provides confidence to stakeholders.
This is an effective and efficient way to handle risks, which would have significant business, client or community impacts.
Certification will assist firms prove and demonstrate that they have sound systems, are keeping them up to date and remain in continued compliance.
Legal firms need to comply with ISO9001 and the interpretation provided in Law 9000 (published and distributed by SAI Global).
It is also strongly recommended that firms seeking certification give full considerations to the interpretations provided in SAI-Global document: GB009.3 Understanding Law 9000 Legal Best Practice, A quality management system for legal practices.
Law 9000 also refers to applicable Commonwealth, State or Territory Legislation and Regulations, which if applicable need to be included in the legal firm management systems and implemented.
