1. Tell me about your company – what industry are you in and what does your business do?
Lockwood is a manufacturer that operates in the construction and housing industry. We design, manufacture, and build high-performance homes using a patented engineered timber building system, proudly developed in New Zealand in 1951. Lockwood Homes are known to perform exceptionally well in all climates—including areas prone to earthquakes and cyclones.
2. Can you please provide some top-level information about your organisation, such as size, number of staff, office locations or similar?
Lockwood is headquartered in Rotorua, with a team of around 60 people. We have a nationwide network of independent contractors and show homes around New Zealand, and we also export worldwide. Our building system has been used successfully in a wide range of domestic and international environments.
3. What motivated you to pursue certification?
Although Lockwood has a long history of successful performance in New Zealand and offshore, we wanted to take things a step further by pursuing formal certification of our entire building system. Because our system is unique, it doesn’t slot neatly into the framework of NZS3604:2011, which created challenges when providing evidence of compliance. Achieving CodeMark certification—typically granted to individual products rather than complete systems—was an important way to provide assurance that our building system is deemed to comply with the New Zealand Building Code. We pursued certification to make the building consent process more streamlined, as local building consent authorities would already have the guarantee our system complies.
4. What was your experience like when working through the certification process with Global-Mark?
The process with Global-Mark was detailed and collaborative. As the first company to pursue CodeMark for a full building system, we had to work closely with them to demonstrate compliance in a way that made sense for our methodology. They were very thorough, but also open to working with us to understand our challenges and provide solutions. In our yearly audits, the auditors don’t just check boxes, they engage with us, understand our plans and achievements, and guide identified areas for improvement.
5. What is the result you’ve achieved—for example, are you satisfied with the result?
Absolutely—we’re proud to have achieved CodeMark certification for the Lockwood Building System. It’s a powerful endorsement of the way we design and manufacture our homes, it gives peace of mind to our customers that they’ve made a sound investment.
6. Have you observed any additional business advantages that arose as a result of achieving certification?
CodeMark certification gives us an advantage when working with councils and consenting authorities. The annual audits required to maintain the certification are also a positive—it helps us uphold consistent processes, keep our documentation in order, and ensure that every home is built “the Lockwood way.” It reinforces quality across the board and strengthens trust with both clients and our build partners.
