ISO45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Approved. What’s next?

Joanne HurstCertification, General, Scheme / Program Update

Dear everyone,

As you know, ISO45001 has been approved and in the process of being published as an international standard. Although ISO45001 is still very new and currently being formalised, we are able to share with you that:

  • OHSAS 18001 is going to be phased out within the next 3 years (or from the date of publication of ISO45001)
  • OHSAS 18001 clients will be required to migrate to ISO45001
  • It is likely ISO45001 will not be published as an AS or AS/NZS standard
  • AS/NZS 4801 is going to continue as an Australia/NZ standard. It is our understanding that a number of State/Territory Regulators call for AS/NZS 4801 in various documents and therefore makes it impossible to change
  • JASANZ is considering putting ISO45001 under a new Scheme: this means certification bodies like Global-Mark will need to apply for a new accreditation (this can be a slow process with document reviews, office audits, witnessing etc) however we hope that currently accredited certification bodies will have a “simpler” migration pathway.

Key dates:

  • ISO45001 was published in March 2018
  • OHSAS Certification will have to be upgraded to ISO45001 by March 2021

Auditor training and Client training:

  • We are now developing training material for our auditors, so we can be operational in the field within the next few months.
  • We plan to also update our external courses to ISO45001 and be in a position to deliver these to the market in the last quarter of 2018
