WHS – Migrating to ISO 45001

Joanne HurstQuality, Environment & WHS, Scheme / Program Update

Many clients are continuing the migration from OHSAS 18001 and AS/NZS 4801 to the new ISO 45001 safety standard.

The cut off for transitioning away from OHSAS 18001 was originally set at March 2021, however due to the impacts of COVID, our accrediting body has given us some flexibility in this respect. If you are still holding OHSAS 18001 certificates currently, please reach out to your client manager at your earliest opportunity to discuss the process for changing to the new international standard.

Our domestic safety standard across Australia and New Zealand – AS/NZS 4801 – has now also been superseded with the release of ISO 45001. Per our previous communications, the cut off date for this migration is 13 July 2023 unless you have legal or contractual obligations to maintain AS/NZS 4801 (must be demonstrated).

A couple of special notes:

  1. If you are looking to include safety in your scope of certification for the first time, we can no longer certify you to OHSAS 18001 and it is our strong recommendation to go straight to ISO 45001. Alternatively, a new AS/NZS 4801 certification would need to be migrated within the first certification cycle, resulting in additional audit time and expense.
  2. For those clients working in the asbestos removal industry, you may be aware of information published by SafeWork NSW indicating AS/NZS 4801 cutoff dates that were not consistent with the above. We have sought and now received clarification from SafeWork NSW that the AS/NZS 4801 migration date of July 2023 is correct, and they have now updated their position paper click here to view.
